Caring Neighbours

Over the past couple of days, there has been some kind of persisting fog, smog, or whatever you want to call it all over Singapore. At first I thought it was maybe a higher humidity in the air that gave it this appearance, but I was told that it was a phenomenon that came around every year around this time.

It is a 100% man-made haze, originated in Indonesia, on the Sumatra Island. Local farmers, wanting to clear their lands or bring donw huge areas of forests simply burn the lands, hundreds of acres at a time, causing a giant haze to cover Singapore, Malaysia, and sometimes Thailand.

If you are interested, you can find more information about this problem on mongabay.com, another article and pictures of the haze on wikipedia.com.
